Castel Sant’Elmo is a medieval castle overlooking the hill of Vomero. In ancient times it was called Patricium and stands where there was a church dedicated to Sant’Eframo, from which Eramo, Ermo and then Elmo, built in the 10th century. During the Neapolitan Revolution of 1799 it was conquered by the people and then occupied by the Republicans and the Republic fell. It became the prison of the most important protagonists of the revolution: Giustino Fortunato, Domenico Cirillo, Francesco Pignatelli di Strongoli, Giovanni Bausan and Luisa Sanfelice. Today it is instead a museum.
