Located in the ambulatory of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the museum presents a significant overview of 13th-18th century Valdostan art, combining pieces from the rich treasure of the Cathedral with works of art from various parishes in the Valley.
Among the most precious specimens, a cameo from the Roman era set in a gold frame with stones and pearls from the 13th century, used as a cope clasp, as well as a unique piece, a consular diptych of Honorius, testimony to late Roman art.
The Gothic sculptures are very important, including an ancient carved wooden antependium from the 13th-14th centuries.
The collection of goldsmiths’ art is very rich, with French objects of Limousin art and precious silver reliquary busts engraved and set with crystals and stones. There are exceptional pieces such as the large reliquary case of San Grato, whose execution, initially entrusted to Guglielmo di Locana, was completed after his death by the Flemish Jean de Malines.
Also part of the museum is a collection of marble sepulchral sculptures, 15th century productions by the Valdostan artist Stefano Mossettaz.
