When the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid opened its doors in 1990, it stood as a modern, contemporary Spanish museum on an international scale. Nevertheless, its building has gone through many challenges in order to achieve this goal.
Throughout all of these years, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia has been increasing its collections, temporary exhibits, audiovisual and educational activities, services and number of visitors.
The Museum offers its visitors an extensive collection of paintings by famous Spanish artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró. The most renowned painting in the museum is Picasso’s Guernica, created in memory of the aerial bombing of the Basque city of the same name during the Spanish Civil War. Most of the works of this artist are found at the Picasso Museum in Malaga.
To visit the museum, art lovers will need several hours, since it is very large. The curious will be able to walk through the museum in one or two hours, to see the most important parts and the main works.
