Where the limpid waters reflect the image of the Matterhorn, at an altitude of 1981 metres, at the foot of Breuil-Cervinia in the Aosta Valley, lies the famous Blue Lake, whose origins appear to be shrouded in magic. Yes, that’s right.
The legend, in fact, tells us that a young boy, after taking the side of a pilgrim who begged for food and water, was sent to fetch firewood, alone, in the middle of the woods. On his return, all that remained was a small mirror of water, suggestive, still and silent: the Blue Lake of Cervinia.
The marvellous topaz colour of its waters is due to the particular algae present on its bottom. The lake is surrounded by centuries-old fir and larch trees, a natural portrait of the majestic mountain that has earned it the epithet "Mirror of the Matterhorn".
If you find yourself near the area, for a summer break or a skiing week with friends, an excursion to the Blue Lake of Cervinia is an absolute must.
