The second version of the Virgin of the Rocks is an oil painting on wood by Leonardo da Vinci, dated 1494-1508. The first version of the painting is in the Louvre Museum. The brothers of the Immaculate Conception of Mary of Milan commissioned a painting for their altar in the church of San Francesco Maggiore from the young artist Leonardo. The very detailed contract provided for a composition with the Madonna between angels, prophets and God the Father, which at an unspecified moment was changed by the painter, opting for the encounter between Jesus and Saint John in the desert, in the presence of Mary and an angel.
