Lantau Island, Hong Kong’s largest island

Lantau Island is Hong Kong’s largest island (even larger than Hong Kong Island) and is known for its pristine nature, virgin hills, green valleys, white sandy beaches, wild trails, monasteries and monuments, as well as some of the most popular attractions in the area. You can reach the island by ferry from Central District to Silvermine Bay (Mui Wo), the trip takes about an hour and takes you among many small islands to Lantau. Silvermine Bay is a small town with a beach and many small restaurants, most of which specialize in fish. Lantau Island has a mountain range whose highest peak is Phoenix Mountain, 935 meters high, the second highest peak in Hong Kong. It is customary to watch the sunrise when climbing Phoenix Mountain. Tourists often start climbing at night and then reach the summit before dawn. Tours include a visit to Ngong Ping 360, Hong Kong’s spectacular tourist attraction. Since its opening in 2006, the Ngong Ping 360 cable car has offered visitors to Lantau Island a different and scenically spectacular way to get to the Big Buddha. It is possible, for a bit more money, to travel with Crystal Cabins, where even the floor is made of glass. The 5.7 km route takes about 25 minutes and offers a wonderful view of Hong Kong Airport, Tung Chung Bay and the green expanses of Lantau Island. The cable car takes you to Ngong Ping Village, which includes three main tourist attractions: Walking with Buddha, Monkey’s Tale Theatre and Ngong Ping Tea House, along with a wide range of restaurants and shops.
