The House of Carlo Goldoni in Venice – Musei Civici Veneziani – hosts an original exhibition dedicated to the life and works of the famous Venetian playwright. A unique visit, to get in touch with the innovative theater of Carlo Goldoni… A mix of suspense, imagination and ingenuity that made him famous in the world.
Ca’ Centani, or Centanni, is a precious example of 15th century Venetian civil architecture, with a porticoed entrance hall and courtyard with an open staircase on the ground floor. The gothic style of the building is especially evident in the external facade, where the visitor’s attention is immediately captured by the splendid four-light window on the main floor.
Owned by the Rizzi family – of whom only the family insignia, a hedgehog, remains on the well in the courtyard – Ca’ Centani was rented out to various families before Carlo Goldoni’s paternal grandfather settled there at the end of the 17th century. Carlo Goldoni was born here on 25 February 1707, and lived here with his family until 1719. Donated to the City of Venice in 1931, today it houses the Museo Casa di Carlo Goldoni and the Centre for Theatre Studies.
The Carlo Goldoni Museum, Venice, develops between the ground floor and the rooms of the main floor while the third floor houses the Library of the Centre for Theatre Studies which, with its 30,000 volumes and documents, represents one of the most complete collections at international level.
