Walking through the rich vegetation, we reach the hermitage of San Magno, an ancient natural cave located on the homonymous mountain, where – according to a deep-rooted tradition – the Bishop of Trani San Magno took refuge during his escape from the persecutions of Decius.
It would seem, in fact, that during his long pilgrimage from Trani to Rome, he stopped at this Hermitage, which today bears his name, from 220 to 230 AD. Here he is said to have catechized the local population, to whom he appeared after his death in 251 A.D., asking them to build a hermitage in the cave where he had lived.
The hermitage is a place of pilgrimage on the day of the patron saint’s day: the miraculous image of the saint is frescoed on the wall of the rock and dates back to 1541.
