Fountain of Venus and Adonis

The sculptural group that adorns the fountain, located in the gardens of the magnificent Royal Palace of Caserta, represents the moment in which Venus begs Adonis in vain not to go hunting, in an attempt to avert the fulfillment of his tragic destiny. Around the young man joyful dogs for the imminent hunt, while hidden on a rock there is the boar that will wound him to death. A crowd of nymphs and cupids participate in the pain of the goddess. The work, a light and animated whole, was made by Gaetano Salomone in Carrara marble.
