Fish Fountain

The Fountain of Pisces is a monumental fountain designed by Luigi Vanvitelli and located in the square of the Sedile in Largo Campo. Because of its location in the medieval Largo del Campo, in front of the Palazzo Genovese, it is also called Fontana del Campo. The composition looks like a semicircular basin placed on two steps. The facade, trapezoidal in shape, is marked by four pilasters surmounted by a pediment and four marble vases. Five are the gushes: one coming from a marble basin placed in a niche at the center of the pediment, two coming from the dolphins placed on the edge of the pool, and two from the masks of Bacchus placed between the two pairs of pilasters. Following the dramatic earthquake of 1980, the monument suffered major damage to the upper part of the work that forced the removal of four marble vases at risk of falling. Restored in the laboratories of the Diocesan Museum, they were later returned to their original location.
