Faeto : a village surrounded by woods overlooking Puglia

Faeto è a small village of a little more than 600 inhabitants on the Subappennino Dauno. The village è surrounded by marvellous woods; the name Francoprovenzale of Faeto è Faíte and derives from “faggeto”, beech wood. Still today the presence of this natural element represents the strength of the village. Wonderful valleys embrace the village and, on clear days, the gaze goes as far as touching the peaks of the Gargano. A’another peculiarityà which represents a central point in the’identityà of the village, in addition to the presence of woods, è the francoprovençal language, which has resisted the passage of time and è still spoken today by the communityà. According to tradition, Faeto was born in the second half of the 13th century, when King Charles d’ Angiò inviò about two hundred soldiers at Crepacore Castle while besieging the Saracens in Lucera. Once the Saracens were defeated, the Duke allowed the Provencal soldiers to stay and live in the castle.
