Built at the end of the 13th century along the banks of the river, the Santa-Clara-a-velha mosteiro is famous for having suffered numerous floods over the centuries and for being the place where Inês de Castro, first lover and then wife of King D. Pedro, was killed. In the 17th century, King D. Joâo IV decided to build a new monastery in a safer location, known as the mosteiro of Santa-Clara-a-nova; having fallen into ruin, the original monastery was recently restored and opened to the public.
