The house museum Giovanni Verga in Catania was the birthplace of the famous Italian writer, one of the most fundamental representatives of Italian realism and literature.
On 11 January 1940 it was declared a national monument.
The apartment used as a typological museum is located on the second floor of a building in the historical centre of Catania, where Verga spent his childhood and later lived for many years with his family. When his last heir, Giovannino Verga Patriarch, died, the building was sold to the region on 23 February 1980, which restored it and turned it into a literary museum.
The interiors are still the original ones. The writer’s complete library, located in the room that was the private study, consists of about 2600 volumes placed on six walnut wood bookcases. In the showcases are also distributed copies of Verga’s manuscripts, the authentic ones are kept in the library of the University of Catania.
