The Castello district is the oldest of the four historic districts in the city of Cagliari. It stands prominently on a hill, and most of the most beautiful monuments to visit in Cagliari are located in the historic Castello district.
With its imposing walls, the Towers of San Pancrazio and dell’Elefante, the Bastion of Saint Remy, the Lion’s Gate, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, narrow alleys and ancient stately palaces, the Citadel of Museums, and the stores of antique dealers and artisans, the medieval district of Castello is the true heart of Cagliari.
About 100 meters away from the sea, this neighborhood was founded by the Pisans in the 13th century. Since then, until after World War II, it was the seat of power and noble residences of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
As you may have already guessed, taking a walk through the streets of the neighborhood is an absolute must that you cannot miss!
