We are at the mouth of the river Isonzo along the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Recognized as the best area in Italy for birdwatching, the Reserve of the mouth of the river Isonzo is a vast wetland formed mainly by reeds, woods and grasslands. Inside the reserve, the main point of interest is the Cona Island, which hosts a well-equipped visitors’ centre (entrance fee € 5.00) and some nature trails with huts for observing the fauna. The area is a wintering destination for numerous species of birds that can be easily spotted. In addition to birds, the Friulian islet is also home to numerous Camargue horses brought from France and left free in the ponds. The protected area is perfectly preserved and can be easily reached by car.
