On our holiday's final day, we ventured to explore Assos, a stunning jewel nestled within Cephalonia, which captivated us enough to become a frequent subject of our photographs. The journey to the village begins with a descent along a quaint path, winding through olive groves and past curious goats, leading to a picturesque settlement adorned with meticulously maintained homes, vibrant bougainvilleas, and inviting blue doorways.
Navigating through the charming marina, visitors face a choice on their ascent to the Castle: a gradual 1800-meter climb along a meandering road or a more challenging 1200-meter trek that includes a series of steps and a steeper path. Opting for the longer route promises a leisurely 20-minute walk – a task made challenging by the midday sun, hence an early morning visit is recommended. Upon reaching the summit, one is rewarded with breathtaking views of Assos, framed by its mesmerizing azure bays.
At the peak, beyond the ancient walls, there's not an abundance of sights, yet the area radiates a serene ambiance, where olive trees sway gently, and tranquility reigns supreme.
Upon returning to the village base, a refreshing dip in the local beach awaits. Though somewhat narrow and closely flanked by bars and restaurants, the beach offers a delightful respite and a chance to immerse oneself in the gentle embrace of the sea, rounding off the visit to Assos with a pleasant, lingering memory.
