Zhejiang and the spectacular Longyou Caves

Discovered in 1992, in the Chinese province of Zhejiang, the Longyou Caves are 36 hand-carved caves. It happened that a man named Wu Anai took up a collection to buy a water pump and dredge the village pond. A body of water used for washing clothes, about which hovered the legend of being bottomless. And when he emptied the pond he discovered that it was not a pool of water at all, but the entrance to an ancient hand-carved cave. Artificial caves of about 30 m each, all decorated with repetitive patterns of parallel lines. The caves are thought to date back to 200 BC. Some of these caves are open to tourists and you can see symbols carved into the rock of animals. However, it remains a mystery as to how these caves could have been built in those years.
