With its 40,000 square meters, the Krakow Market Square (Rynek Głowny) is not only the largest in Poland, but is also the largest medieval square in Europe. Designed in 1257, the square forms the center of the city and it has an important historical, cultural and social value. Over the centuries it has been the place chosen by merchants and an impassive witness of numerous events, such as ceremonies, celebrations and public executions, even taking the name of Adolf Hitler Platz during the Nazi occupation.Krakow’s Mercado Square is the most important place in the city and it is pleasant to cross it, both during the day, to enjoy its lively atmosphere and its outdoor bars, and at night, when the soft lights give it a more romantic look.
Spending time in the square, you can listen to the "hejnal" melody, played every hour by a trobettist, on the highest of the towers of the Basilica of Santa Maria.
