Wines of Tuscany: Morellino di Scansano DOCG

The Morellino di Scansano DOCG denomination of origin is reserved for wines produced with at least 85% of Sangiovese grapes (locally called Morellino) and the remainder from other non-aromatic black grapes suitable for cultivation in the region of Tuscany, in the area comprising the hilly strip of the province of Grosseto between the Ombrone and Albegna rivers, which includes the entire administrative territory of the municipality of Scansano and part of the municipalities of Manciano, Magliano in Toscana, Grosseto, Campagnatico, Semproniano and Roccalbegna, in the province of Grosseto. Morellino di Scansano wine was awarded the Denominazione di Origine Controllata in 1978, and in 2006 the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita. Morellino di Scansano DOCG wine, if intended to be qualified with the mention Riserva, must undergo a period of aging of no less than two years, at least one of which must be in wooden barrels. Both types have a modest acidity content. The colour is ruby red, evolving towards garnet with ageing, especially in the Riserva type. The bouquet is intense and complex, with notes of wild berries. In the riserva type there are hints of wood and spicy notes and riper fruit. On the palate the basic type is dry, warm and slightly tannic. The Riserva has a longer persistence.
