The Vyborg Castle was one of the three main castles of Finland. E ‘was built as the easternmost outpost of the medieval Kingdom of Sweden: Karelia is located on the isthmus, on a small island in the innermost corner of the Gulf of Finland. E ‘was originally built in 1290. The city was originally located inside the outer walls of the castle, at the island fortress, but had to be moved to its present location off the island due to lack of space.Vyborg is a city with a population of about 74 thousand people located in the north-west of Leningrad Oblast, about 140 km from St. Petersburg. In total, more than 300 different monuments are concentrated here: architectural, historical, sculptural, archaeological, garden and park art.
The main attraction of this city and its symbol is the Vyborg Castle – one of the few fully preserved monuments of Western European medieval military architecture in Russia. Following the October Revolution, Vyborg became a Finnish town and Finland gained independence in 1918. Vyborg Castle was used as the headquarters of the Second Finnish Division until 1940 and also when the World War II broke out. In 1944, the Castle was captured by the Russian forces and used not only for deploying guard’s battalions within its walls but also as a dwelling for officers’ families for nearly two decades. In 1964 Vyborg Castle was no longer a military building and it was handed over to the Inspectorate of Monument Preservation. After several years of restoration work and archaeological excavations, the building was made available to the public and the first exhibitions were opened in the Vyborg Natural Museum. The Castle was granted the status of the National Museum in 2000. It houses many exhibitions dedicated to various topics.
