The varied route through the Vogelbergsteig to the historic ruins of Dürnstein Castle is one of the most beautiful trails in the Wachau.
During the ascent, hikers enjoy impressive panoramic views of Dürnstein and the surrounding landscape. Noteworthy viewpoints are the protruding rock pulpit of the Vogelberg (546 m) and the Starhembergwarte (564 m) on the Schlossberg summit. The key to the lookout point is available at the Fesslhütte.
The ascent up the Vogelbergsteig is interesting due to the many different sections of the trail, but challenging due to the relatively steep gradient. The last third leads through rocks and over a granite slab with scree and is well secured with wire ropes and chains. In snow and ice conditions, the Vogelbergsteig is not accessible for safety reasons.
