Benalmádena is a town of 30000 inhabitants on the Costa del Sol that enjoys an excellent location on the Mediterranean Sea, extending over an area of 30 square kilometers. It is about 20 kilometers from Malaga airport, with which it is well connected. It has seen rapid expansion in recent years and has become very popular, especially with British tourists. It is a very lively town, especially during the summer period, when it is invaded by literally thousands of tourists. Benalmádena offers very original sights, such as the Buddhist Stupa of the Enlightenment, Colomares Castle, and Bil Castle; a Moorish-style building stands out in the coastal landscape, thanks to its red tile decoration. In Benalmádena, tourists can also visit the three watchtowers preserved in the city-Torre Bermeja, Torrequebrada, and Torremuelle.
To explore its historic center, it is recommended to start at the Santo Domingo Church, next to which is a lookout that offers an extraordinary view of the coast. Near this monument are the Jardines del Muro, designed by César Manrique. This walk can add two more stops: the Scultura de la Niña (sculpture of the girl) and La Fonda, whose building is now occupied by a hospitality school.
Culture manifests itself in many different ways in Benalmádena. The Felipe Orlando Museum of Pre-Columbian Art is a must for lovers of this genre, as it houses one of the best collections in Spain.
