Abbateggio is a small village that stands in a beautiful natural setting, between forests of beech and oak, in the Majella National Park. It is located on the northern slopes of the Majella, along the road that leads from the exit of Scafa (A25) to the famous spa town of Caramanico.
The village is known as the "crib village", for its ancient and perfectly preserved appearance; the center, clinging to a rocky spur over the valley of Fosso Fonte Vecchia, enchants with its white stone houses, built with the typical white stone of Majella, handcrafted by local stonecutters, the narrow and intricate alleys and the steep stairways that guide the visitor’s steps. From here the view sweeps from the Gran Sasso Massif to touch, in the distance, the sea. From Abbateggio you can start a journey to discover the ancient hermitages hidden among the rocks of the Maiella or enjoy exciting excursions in the Orfento Valley. Abbateggio hosts the prestigious "Majella Park National Nature Literature Award" dedicated to writers of the green pen.
