Uyuni’s Salar: the largest salty expanse on earth.

There is a place hidden among the unimaginable heights of Bolivia that seduces any traveler, a place so special and out of this world that it leads to madness: it is the Salar of Uyuni, known to be the largest salty expanse of the earth. As many as 10 billion tons of salt, an immense desert, as big as Abruzzo, a magical place that with its whiteness disorients and confuses. The Salar is located near the city of Uyuni, in the southern Andean plateau of Bolivia, at 3600 m above sea level. About 40,000 years ago it was part of the Minchin, a giant prehistoric lake. When the lake dried up, two present-day lakes Poopò and Uru Uru and two salt deserts were formed: the Salar de Coipassa and the gigantic Salar de Uyuni, one of the most incredible places in the world. According to some Inca legends, in the Salar de Uyuni there are the so-called Ojos del Salar ("Eyes of the Salt Desert"), or puddles invisible to the naked eye because of the strong reflection, which swallowed entire caravans. Fortunately we avoided them, so we can continue to tell you about our experience in this magical place.
