Unesco | The Charterhouse of Padula

This complex represents the most representative historical and artistic monument of the Municipality of Polla. The church has a Renaissance portico with three round arches and a staircase in front. The interior of the church has a single nave with small side recesses that serve as chapels. The apse has a square plan. Its interior is entirely covered with beautiful paintings and frescoes, it is a real museum of painting of good art". So wrote Antonio Sacco in 1930 in his monumental work "La Certosa di Padula". And this is exactly how it is: whoever enters Sant’Antonio is dazzled in contemplation of the forty canvases painted in 1666 by Ragolìa for the ceiling and arranged in three parallel rows on the main axis of the nave.
