Unesco: the Castle of the Mount and its mysteries

Universally considered a brilliant example of medieval architecture, Castel del Monte actually combines diverse stylistic elements, from the Romanesque cut of the lions of the entrance to the Gothic frame of the towers, from the classical art of the interior friezes to the defensive structure of the architecture to the delicate Islamic refinements of its mosaics. The great emperor Frederick II, dubbed Stupor Mundi, è the “father” of Castel del Monte, inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage monuments since 1996. Castel del Monte holds splendid mythological creatures such as decorations in the keystones of the interior rooms and rich porphyry frames in the doors.
