Ulan-Ude is the first city along the Trans-Siberian

Ulan-Ude is the first city along the Trans-Siberian that feels like you’ve finally arrived to Asia. That is, after already traveling 3000 km into it. It’s the capital of Buryatia republic and most of the people there practice buddhism, so it’s also very different from the rest of Russia which is mainly atheist or orthodox Christian.
