The medieval Via Mercatovecchio leads to the foot of Udine Castle. It is one of the city’s most elegant streets and takes its name from the market that was held here from 1248 onwards.
Today it is the heart of shopping: protected by elegant porticoes, Via Mercatovecchio is lined with ancient houses and noble palaces, cafés and taverns, boutiques and shops where time seems to have stood still.
The winding route follows the ancient route of the moat and the walls that protected the Castle. A walk along Via Marcovecchio is an opportunity to admire the precious palaces such as the Monte di Pietà, seat of the Cassa di Risparmio, which dates back to 1500 and on the ground floor houses the Chapel of Santa Maria Del Monte, famous for the baroque Pietà by Meyring.
