Founded on 3 January 1914, the Caffé San Marco is the meeting place par excellence for the city’s intellectuals. The café was opened in a building owned by Assicurazioni Generali, owner and manager was Marco Lovrinovich. His café, where people went to read the newspaper and discuss politics, art and culture, almost immediately became a meeting place for intellectuals (among its frequent visitors were Italo Svevo, Umberto Saba, James Joyce, Gianni Stuparich and Virgilio Giotti) and young irredentists, so much so that, inside, they even began to forge passports to allow anti-Austrian patriots to flee to Italy. Here Joice thought about his "Ulisse".
