The wooden crucifix, in the centre of Piazza Orefici, has the peculiarity of being "double face"; the sacred effigy is painted so that it can be admired both on the front and on the back. The Christ is placed under a wrought copper cover and is supported by a base where the symbols of Christ’s passion are represented. The votive aedicule of Borgo Orefici was donated by the Di Roberto family in 1839, then restored in 1877.
A popular story has it that a trader of precious stones, a certain Francesco di Roberto, had a brother who suffered from violent asthma attacks. On a sultry day in 1839, the two brothers went for a walk in the countryside of Afragola in search of coolness. Almost by chance their carriage stopped in front of a crucifix placed in a lonely lane; from that moment on Salvatore, the sick brother, felt better and the asthma attacks stopped.
For grace received, the two brothers wanted the precious effigy to be brought inside the Borgo Orefici and placed in the central square. Even today it is believed that the crucifix protects against respiratory problems.
