Once upon a time there were two beautiful sister mermaids, who lived in the abysses on the shores of the Baltic Sea. One of them decided to swim away to the Denmark Strait and today you can see her sitting on her rock at the entrance to Copenhagen harbour.
The other swam as far as Gdansk and, going up the Vistula River, reached the Old Town of Warsaw, a place so beautiful that she decided not to leave anymore. The mermaid entertained the fishermen with her sweet singing every night until one day a rich merchant saw her and thought that if he caught her, he could earn a lot of money.
The stingy man, with a trick, caught the mermaid and locked her up in a wooden shack far from the water. One evening, a young local laborer heard the creature’s cries and went to free her during the night. The siren, to thank the young man, promised that if the town needed help, it would come back to protect her.
For this reason, the Warsaw mermaid, placed in the middle of the Market Square, is armed with sword and shield. We certainly cannot promise you that during your visit to Warsaw you will meet a mermaid, but the city has beautiful monuments and fairytale places.
