First the Romans, then the Longobards, the Franks of Charlemagne, the Este family, the Swabians and finally the Serenissima: due to its strategic position, in defence of Padua, Monselice welcomed the styles and cultures of civilisations from different eras. The signs of these presences can still be found in the ancient medieval castle, for example, in whose library the Antiquarium Longobardo has been set up. A short distance from the Duomo is the path leading to the Jubilee Sanctuary of the Seven Churches, the street that serves as the entrance to Villa Duodo. For those who appreciate nature visits, the path leading to Monte Ricco is a must. For those who love folk festivals, on the third Sunday of September there is the Giostra della Rocca with the parade of the historical procession along the streets of the city, followed in the afternoon by the Quintana Race and the delivery of the Palio to the winning district. The Joust consists of a challenge between the nine districts of the city: chess games, competitions of strength and skill such as archery, the race of the millstones and the relay race. Its origin dates back to 1239, when Emperor Frederick II of Swabia passed through the town and was welcomed by great celebrations, which were repeated in the following years. Other events include La Rocca in Fiore, the Notte Bianca in Moselice, and Christmas in Monselice.
