Perhaps not everyone knows that there is a third ampulla of San Gennaro, containing the liquefied blood. It is kept in the Vincentian Monumental Complex, in the popular and suggestive Borgo dei Vergini. The discovery of the third relic of the saint was made during the works of rearrangement of the Chapel of the relics, of Vanvitellian architecture. The ampulla with the blood of the patron saint of Naples is therefore added to the two placed inside the Neapolitan cathedral.
Like every other relic inside the chapel, this one is also accompanied by the bishop’s authentication, thanks to which it was possible to verify that it is indeed the blood of our Patron Martyr. The relic, donated to the Congregation of the Mission of Naples in 1793, was found in a liquid state; a real miracle in the eyes of the Neapolitan people.
Although the history of the most famous ampullae preserved in the Cathedral of Naples is known to all, the one found in Borgo dei Vergini is still to be known.
