The Tempietto di Sant’Emidio alle Grotte Sanctuary is so called because it is leaning against the caves of an ancient Christian necropolis. It represents the most significant prototype of Baroque religious art of all the Marche region, as well as one of the most important monuments of the capital. According to legend, the saint to whom this church is dedicated (Emidio d’Ascoli) went so far beheaded, with his head in his hands, to bury himself. An incredible story that tells the strength of this man, not surprisingly protector against the earthquake.
