The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Lobra, dominates the cascade of houses, mostly fishermen’s, which, cut by wide steps, reaches the beach. The ancient church of the Lobra rose near the sea, on the pier of the beach of Fontanella. It had three small naves and after the destruction of the City of Massa in 1465, it became the Cathedral again. The first stone to build the new church was laid on July 26th 1528 by Monsignor Marchesi in "Capitello" of the Bishop’s Canteen.
The image of the Madonna della Lobra, painted in fresco on the central wall of the ancient temple, was, in 1570, sawn, together with the wall, by Costanzo Parascandalo, and solemnly transferred to the new Church.
