The Risiera di San Sabba was declared a national monument in 1965 and is sadly known to be the only Nazi extermination camp on Italian soil.
Once a rice husking plant, in 1943 it was occupied by the SS who deported political dissidents, partisans, Slovenians and Croats, and above all Jews, to other camps, such as those in Auscwitz and Dachau, where they were to find death. From June 1944 to April 1945 a crematorium was also active. Overall it is estimated that the number of people who lost their lives was around 4000-5000.
