It is a biennial herbaceous plant, belonging to the Chenopodiacee family. The Red Chard is a root vegetable that can reach a height of 50 cm. The numerous stems, which branch out from the collar, are red and the leaves, which are large in size, are green. The homogeneous dark red root system is very large and rhomboidal-ellipsoidal in the upper part, while in the lower part it narrows considerably, ending in a filament.The production area includes the municipalities of Castellazzo Bormida, Casalcermelli, Castelspina, Sezzadio, Oviglio and Masio, where a local selection called "Rossa di Castellazzo" is grown, in the province of Alessandria.
