Portara is considered the symbol of the island of Naxos and is stormed by tourists at sunset, when it offers one of the most spectacular views of the Chora and the coast. Built in 530 BC on the islet of Palatia, it is connected to the mainland by a thin strip of land and was once the entrance to a temple dedicated to the god Apollo which was never completed.
Once you get close to the imposing structure, you will be amazed by its size: a block 6 meters high by 3 meters wide that with the shadows of dusk becomes almost magical.
