From a fauna point of view, the Pollino area is one of the most important in the whole of southern Italy. In addition to the variety of environments, the geographical position allows a high richness of species and zoological peculiarities.
Among the Insects must be mentioned Buprestis splendens, one of the rarest beetles in Europe, and Rosalia alpina, a beautiful and flashy ash-blue beetle with velvety black spots, typical of the extensive mature beech forests in Pollino and the Orsomarso Mountains, and indicative of a low degree of alteration of forest environments.
