The parish church of Santa Maria and the crooked column

The Romanesque parish church of Santa Maria, in addition to the treasures kept inside, has two notable features: the 12th century façade, with its Cycle of the Seasons, preserves one of the very few examples of medieval sculpture that has maintained its original colours. One of the columns of the apse, on the Piazza Grande, is very interesting: it seems to genuflect, and is thought to be the architect’s ‘signature’, although there is no evidence of this theory.
