The old Opicina tramway

The tramway of Opicina, also known as "Opicina Tramway", one of the tourist attractions of Trieste, is a panoramic interurban tramway line managed by Trieste Trasporti. Its unique feature in Europe is that it has a section of about 800 m on a steep slope, along which the cars are pushed or held by shield-cars linked to a funicular system. The service, classified as line 2, has an urban route in the center of Trieste and an interurban section connecting the village of Villa Opicina on the plateau of Karst, at 329 m above sea level; in operation since September 9, 1902, it is just over 5 km long. The system represents the only railway transport line left in the Julian capital, after the suppression of the urban network in 1970.
