Basilica of St. Cecilia in Trastevere in Rome – In the heart of Trastevere, a characteristic district in the centre of Rome, there are two basilicas decorated with precious golden mosaics: St. Mary and St. Cecilia. The latter houses in the apse a mosaic work of immense value, commissioned by Pope Pasquale I in 820, the period of greatest splendour for the realization of the great mosaics. The glass tesserae work, a symbol of power and greatness, depicts Christ the Redeemer surrounded by saints and the Pope’s presence: on the left are St. Paul, St. Cecilia and the pontiff presenting the model of the church to Jesus and, on the right, St. Peter, St. Agatha and St. Valerian. Below are twelve lambs with their heads turned towards the Holy Spirit.
