The Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno was built in the hilly district of Staglieno and is a magnificent example of Italian monumentalism of the nineteenth century. The structure, of more than 300,000 square metres, is surrounded by a very wide colonnade, at the centre of which stands out a Pantheon, or Famedio, of great architectural value.
Staglieno was, in the years of its construction, an "artistic workshop" for the sculptors of Genoa and its surroundings, while now it is firmly linked to the historical figures of the city of the Lantern, among which undoubtedly stand out Giuseppe Mazzini, Michele Novaro (who set to music Mameli’s Hymn), the singer-songwriter Fabrizio De Andrè and the patriot Nino Bixio who, who died in Banda Aceh, was brought here in 1876, three years after his death.
