Absolutely the monument-symbol of the city, the Mezquita of Cordoba is today identified with the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Mary Most Holy, a name that underlines its current Christian identity. However, by visiting the Mezquita, you will understand that the Gothic cathedral (built in 1523) is set (illegally, we would say!) inside the ancient, endless mosque, giving rise to a characteristic and fascinating mixture of architectural styles and religious symbols. You’ll get lost in the well-known labyrinth of arches and white-red pillars, being amazed at miḥrāb, the ancient prayer area of the Muslims, and it won’t be so strange to see a crucifix under a Mudejar-style arch.
