The medieval castle of Foix

The medieval castle of Foix, once an impregnable stronghold, dominates the rooftops of the old town and the confluence of the Ariège and Arget rivers from the top of its rocky peak, and still has three towers with machicolations and high walls. Today, this imposing fortress of the Counts of Foix is home to the Departmental Museum of the Ariège, a space that illustrates the history of the Foix countryside and the castle through thematic exhibitions and medieval collections consisting of everyday objects, weapons and armour. This site perched on the rock also offers, from the top of the circular-based tower, a splendid panoramic view of the town, the Ariège valley and the surrounding mountains. At the foot of the castle, the old town of Foix is particularly inviting for a stroll, with narrow streets lined with shops and pretty squares with outdoor cafés. Along the way, visitors can admire the abbey church of Saint-Volusien and its magnificent 17th century sculpted stalls, as well as the Baltard-type indoor grain market. In August, the Théâtre de Verdure in Foix stages a historical re-enactment with sound and light. On the first weekend in September, the town is festive: jousts, dances, a torchlight procession and concerts.
