The Mausoleum of Mohammed V, an imposing white marble construction dedicated to the man who led Morocco to independence, erected between 1962 and 1967. It is located in the courtyard of the Hassan mosques and since 2012 is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The royal tomb is built in white marble in the classic Arab-Andalusian style and about 400 craftsmen worked on it for ten years. In the large square room lie the earthly remains of Mohammed V and his sons, Prince Moulay Abdellah and King Hassan II. But who was Mohammed V? He was the sultan who ruled Morocco over two terms, with a ‘pause’ of about 4 years; the first of these began in 1927 and ended in 1953; the second began in 1957 and ended in 1961, the year of his death.
