Maritozzi are soft sweet rolls filled with whipped cream, delicious breakfast and snack cakes typical of the Roman cuisine, served in every bar in the capital and pastry shop in Lazio! It is a leavened cake that has its origins in ancient Rome, when this cake, kneaded by hand with flour, eggs, honey, citrus peels, raisins and pine nuts, was given as a gift to future brides by their boyfriends, who were used to call "maritozzo" (popular Roman term for "husband") from which derives the name of these soft loaves! Like every traditional recipe there are different versions. The most known and appreciated: I Maritozzi Marchigiani, with a particularly elongated shape and rich in raisins, those Sicilian, the Pugliese.
