Another unusual destination and unmissable event in Tuscany is the emptying of Lake Vagli, in Vagli Sotto (Lucca). The lake was artificially formed following the construction of a hydroelectric dam, whose waters have submerged some villages including Fabbriche di Careggine, a medieval village of blacksmiths abandoned in 1947, which re-emerges at each emptying of the lake, during maintenance work on the dam. This event has occurred only four times: in 1958, 1974, 1983 and the last in 1994. The next one was announced in 2016, but was postponed by Enel.Perhaps, Covid permitting, the event will finally happen in 2021.
