The Kasbah

The Kasbah of Tangier is a fortified citadel located in the upper part of the city, a short walk from the Medina. It is one of the oldest and most historic places in Tangier and is one of the city’s most important landmarks. The Kasbah was built in the 12th century by the Almoravid and Almohadi rulers, and was later renovated and expanded by successive Berber and Arab rulers over the centuries. The citadel is surrounded by massive walls, which offer spectacular views of the city and the coast. The Kasbah of Tangier is divided into two parts: the upper part, where the palaces and houses of the rulers and nobles are located, and the lower part, where the markets and craft stores are located. The upper part features Moorish and Andalusian architecture, with inner courtyards, fountains, and gardens, while the lower part is a maze of narrow, winding streets filled with craft stores and restaurants. One of the main attractions of the Tangier Kasbah is the Kasbah Museum, which houses an extensive collection of archaeological and artistic artifacts from the region, including textiles, ceramics, musical instruments, and metal objects. In addition, the Tangier Kasbah is famous for its traditional Turkish baths, which offer a relaxing and purifying experience in the heart of the city. The baths feature heated halls and hot water pools, and are a must-visit experience for those who wish to immerse themselves in Moroccan culture.
