The island of Elephanta (Gharapuri) – the Cave Town

The island of Elephanta (Gharapuri) – the Cave Town – is located about 10 kilometres from Mumbai on the east side of the port. The island owes its name to the huge stone elephant that was found there by Portuguese sailors. The island in the Sea of Oman contains a collection of rock art associated with the Shiva cult. The seven caves with their decorated temples and statues from Hindu mythology bear witness to a lost civilization. One of the most perfect expressions of Indian art can be found here, particularly represented by the enormously high reliefs in the main cave.
